Dean Wilson lives and works in Port Hardy B.C. Canada. A social worker by profession, he runs a friendship center in town. In his capacity as a counselor as well as a medicine man, much of his work involves helping the aboriginal community in and around Port Hardy. Dean and his wife Cathie are also foster parents of three girls they adopted several years ago. This documentary is about two of those girls’ coming of age ceremony. As is prescribed by Aboriginal tradition, a coming of age feast is held, acknowledging these two girls’ status as young women in front of chiefs, community members and invited friends. Six years ago my daughter Avani was diagnosed with childhood leukemia. At the present time she is in remission and doing very well. The initial three years of intensive chemotherapy treatment that Avani endured involved oral medication, blood transfusions, intravenous therapy, spinal injections and a series of medical tests.
