Director Statement

Over 200 years ago in Africa, women predominantly ruled the continent, from Queen Amina of Zazzau (c. 1533 – 1633 BC), Queeen Anna Nzinga of Angola (c. 1583 – 1663), Queen Nefertiti of Egypt (1292 BC), Makeba, Queen of Sheba (960 BC), Empress Candence of Ethiopia (323 BC), Yaa Asentewa of Ashanti Kingdom of Ghana (c.1830-1921) and others.

Today, inequality, discrimination against women’s rights and other gender based prejudices are rife. Amina film is a demand for answers to this all important question: Who subjugated African women and why were they subjugated.

This first part of a trilogy, focuses on Amina’s rise to power. I felt it was important to first of all, humanize this exceptional woman: her pain and agony, in other to make her relatable.
