Grimoire

A short story about magic, loss and self discovery. It’s a film that explores our relationships, it could be called a love story… but it’s more than that. It’s a story about the people we meet on our journey, the people that become significant part of our lives; our family, our friends, our mentors and our lovers. And the choices we make; what is important and what is just noise that distracts us.

Director Biography – Joanna Kolodziej

Born in Warsaw, and at the age of 10 left on an overnight train with my parents and a backpack in which I had 2 books (The Jungle Book, and Greek Myths), not knowing that I would only have those 2 books for the next year to entertain myself in a small mountain village in Austria as we awaited passage to Canada.

Attended grade school and high school in Windsor Ontario, which was once again a whiplash experience from cottage country to motor city (a small brother to Detroit across the river), where I promised my gaggle of girlfriends to write a book about our Friday nights with cars, bars, and various hotel parties we threw, attended or crashed (you pick which verb goes with what noun!)

Got accepted to Waterloo engineering, but didn’t expect to go because it was so expensive, until my Mom filled a truck full of furniture that she was great at selling, and shipped me off to the best engineering school in Canada (according to Maclean’s Magazine) to kick-start my career.

After graduating, ended up in Vancouver, once again a culture shock from the east coast rat-race to west coast chill vibe and working in clean tech before climate change was stressing everyone out. Here, I continued to write, and discovered my true calling, program management, basically telling people what to do… and… when I met my significant other, who introduced me to film, discovered that managing programs, is very similar to directing a film. So, I crossed over, and here I am. Enjoying every minute of every day, and especially those sunrises on my balcony that you see in the film.

Director Statement

Words of wisdom from my East European parents as I left for university; engineering will put food on the table, once that’s covered, you can write as many stories as you want.
