The Double Ninth Festival, with a history of over 2,000 years, is a traditional Chinese festival. On this day, people climb to high places to pray for blessings and wish the elderly good health and long life. In Daoist culture, this day is considered an auspicious time for ascending to immortality. Therefore, the Shamanistic traditions of Northeast China, which use ‘immortals’ as spiritual mediums, have inherited this Daoist tradition and regard the Double Ninth Festival as the most important festival of the year. On this day, they hold rituals to pay homage to the immortals.
This documentary records the entire ritual process led by Wu Changshan, a shaman from Northeast China, on the Double Ninth Festival, as well as the scenes of him taking on new disciples and treating patients.
